O.J. Simpson to sue Las Vegas casino that banned him for $100M

O.J. Simpson could be sprinting to court to sue a Las Vegas casino that permanently bounced him from the premises, according to a letter from his lawyer. Simpson’s attorney told The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas to hold on to all sorts of evidence — because he’s planning to sue for at least $100 million after stories that the Juice was banned for being drunk and disruptive. In November, tales circulated that the disgraced Hall of Famer, fresh from a nine-year prison stay for an armed robbery rap, was persona non grata for getting rowdy. Simpson, 70, denies being disruptive at the casino’s Clique bar on Nov. 8. His lawyer, Malcolm LaVergne claims casino workers concocted a “fake reason” to kick out Simpson, according to a Dec. 29 letter obtained by the Daily News. LaVergne wrote the “false and malicious allegations” were a way for the casino to make money off a media tip while embarrassing Simpson and jeopardizing his parole status. The casino “acted with malice and racial prejudice,” he said. Among the sought-after evidence, LaVergne said he wants all the security surveillance footage related to the incident. He told the Daily News he might be willing to call off the case if the casino issued “certain retractions.” “It was the most ridiculous thing ever,” LaVergne said, adding his client wasn’t “going to take it lying down anymore.”

Obama to speak at MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference

BOSTON — Former President Barack Obama will speak at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference on Feb. 23 to discuss his time in office and the next chapter in his life. The conference announced Friday night on Twitter that Obama, an avid sports fan, would make an appearance. MIT has held the conference annually since 2007, hosting industry professionals to discuss the role of analytics in sports. This year, Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman are scheduled to speak. Also on the list of speakers — retired baseball star Alex Rodriguez, FiveThirtyEight founder Nate Silver and Los Angeles Clippers owner and former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. Obama routinely filled out NCAA Tournament brackets on ESPN during his presidency. His White House press secretary, Josh Earnest, once said Obama would consider being part of the ownership group for an NBA franchise.

Tennell wins US skating title, homes in on Olympic berth

Bradie Tennell won her first US ladies' figure skating title on Friday with a near-flawless performance that is all but sure to earn her a trip to the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics next month.

Tennell, skating a free program to "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes," electrified the crowd at the SAP Center in San Jose, California, landing each of her jumps en route to a total of 219.51 points.

Mirai Nagasu, a 2010 Olympian who was passed over four years ago, finished second with 213.84, bursting into tears of relief and joy after completing a free skate that included a less-than perfect triple Axel and a bevy of triple jumps.

"Being left off the team (in 2014) has pushed me to become a stronger skater," Nagasu said this week. "It was a very hard thing to accept."

Karen Chen, the 2017 US champion, finished third with 198.59 points and will likely be named to the third and final US Olympic women's berth when the lineup is announced on Saturday.

Ashley Wagner, who got a 2014 Olympic nod instead of Nagasu, finished fourth with 196.19 points and could well find herself the odd woman out this time around.

The selection committee will weigh the results of these championships as well as other major events. In addition to finishing off the podium in San Jose, and Wagner's Grand Prix season was disrupted by a leg infection.

Wagner said she "skated with heart" as she performed the "La La Land" program she had gone back to only about a month ago.

"I delivered something that was solid and something that I'm proud of," she said. "I want to be on the Olympic team and I'm really mad that I'm in this position again."
